RELAX NOW

Everybody talks about it, thinks about it and even sometimes actually gets around to allowing it to happen.   But why is it still so hard for most of us to  JUST  RELAX?

Stressful thinking and worrying are the main culprits.  Nurtured by negative self talk and overreactions to misperceived threats, our Fight or Flight Response gets triggered way too often for our own physical health and mental well being.

 RELAX  NOW  is not a tough concept to grasp on an intellectual basis.  It means that regardless of what else you think or feel is more important at a given moment in time, you focus on relaxed deep breathing and positive self talk RIGHT AT THIS MOMENT… NO EXCUSES…NO INTERRUPTIONS…JUST…RELAX NOW…

SO  TRY  IT,   RIGHT  NOW……..

WHY WORRY? BE HAPPY.

The lyrics to that  song “Why Worry? Be Happy” can be understood in so many ways.  Is it about just being in denial about things to worry about?  Is it just the ultimate expression of the cockeyed optimist who sees a glass as half full, even down to the last drop of water?  Is it just a catchy tune with simplistic ideas?

I submit that it is any of the above, but it can also be a reminder to ourselves of the empowering notion we can actually change our thinking and our feeling at any given moment if we try.  By focusing our attention and energy on “being happy”–regardless of what happy really means to each of us–we put distance between ourselves and the source of the worrying.

The sheer will power and confidence that we can muster to allow us to reach for the happy thoughts and feelings will inevitably reduce stressful thinking and worrying.  Cut the cycle of stressful thinking within yourself with positive self talk and calm coping skills.  If you start believing that at any given moment, you can change your own attitude, inevitably with practice, you will get better and better at it.  Trust yourself.

IT’S TIME FOR ALTERNATIVES TO JUST POPPING PILLS

Uninteded drug overdoses are now the second leading cause of accidental death in America, behind auto crashes, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and they almost doubled in frequency from 1999 to 2004.  It is believed by researchers that the chief causes of the increase in unintended fatalities were increased use of sedatives and prescription painkillers like Vicodin and Oxycontin.

What is happening in our country and others is that too many easily available powerful medications are being overprescribed and overused and abused while benignly neglectful government agencies and greedy pharmaceutical and medical organizations pretend they have no significant reason to maintain the abundant supplies.

Young people intent on getting intoxicated or changing their mood have shifted away from using illegal drugs to  swallowing prescription medications which are often easily available from their parents’ supplies at home. 

Prescription medications save lives under the right circumstances, but for too many people, popping pills is just the easiest way to solve problems of stress, tension, anxiety and pain.  It’s time to start educating and promoting the ideas that these uncomfortable stress-related health issues can be significantly helped, if not cured, by alternative techniques that have no side effects, and if practiced regularly, can provide meaningful long term benefits.

My personal grudge is against the advertising and promotion of prescription sleep pills.  Although the small print on the labels state that no one should use the pills for more than 7 to 10 days to relieve insomnia without consulting with their prescribing physician, few insomnia sufferers or their doctors seem to follow these instructions.  And unfortunately the instructions regarding these sleeping pills’  special problems of dependence, withdrawal, tolerance, memory impairment and changes in behavior and thinking go ignored–if they are even read at all–by people who just gulp them down each night desparate for relief for their sleep deprivation problems.

We need better education and enforcement of ethical marketing and prescribing of  these “quick fix” prescriptions.  For your own sake, try  another way to fall asleep using relaxation and other healthy alternatives instead of just popping pills.  Unfortunately they continue to be used despite loss of effectiveness because of the problems of withdrawal and dependency for users.

THANKS FOR THE HUMOR

Art Buchwald recently passed away and left us laughing even during his last months under hospice care.  During those tv interviews, he sat smiling, chomping on an unlit cigar and keeping the interviewer in stitches.  He declined to undergo dialysis and outlasted expectations for a quick demise.

In the context of some of his buddies returning to visit again after already saying farewell on earlier visits, Art Buchwald’s sense of humor radiated.  His celebrity friends teased that people suspected he was faking to get them to be nicer, and he laughed in response.

His humor columns during the turbulent political and cultural upheavals and divisions of the Sixties and Seventies were able to tickle the collective funny bones of so many Americans even though the serious issues he mocked were hard to laugh at.  He was not mean spirited or sarcastic and didn’t really smear anyone with malicious innuendoes.

He was more like the kid in the fairy tale who is the only one with the honesty and guts to tell everyone that the Emperor was not wearing clothes.  He brought a sense of perspective and respect that was positive and optimistic while it was playfully mocking the actions of pompous arrogant politicians and celebrities.

I personally extend deep thanks to him for bringing cheery moments in his newspaper columns on some of the bleakest days of our country’s history.  His sense of humor and humanity remained intact up to his Final Curtain.

THE SUBJECT of ANGELS

According to a recent AP-AOL survey an overwhelming majority of Americans believe that angels are real regardless of individual backgrounds and religious convictions. Obviously there are different  concepts of angels. 

Religious angels can be visualized and experienced by some people according to biblical  or spiritual sources, or by others kind of like a kindly guardian angel always looking out for our good.

There are financial investors who are called angels by some persons because they bless their trusted enterpreneurs with the assets to make  business dreams come true.  Needless to say, these types do not look for significant input from any divine source for their evaluations and chosen people.

I HEREBY NOMINATE MY FOUR GRANDCHILDREN, ages 2,3,4, and 5, AS MY PREFERRED ANGELS.  I truly believe that young children have so much to teach and remind us adults.  My grandkids have taught me how to live in the present more easily, how to laugh with your whole body(not just a tight grin) and how to reexperience the childlike joy that they feel so naturally.

And when I watch other young kids laughing with parents or grandparents or uncles or aunts or close adult family or friends, I am always touched by the effect on the adults.  Just look at their faces and watch their body movements.  For at least a few wonderful moments, there is  Heaven on Earth and these wonderful young angels are here to help bridge the gap for us wise old fools.

RELAXED RESOLUTIONS

At the beginning of the year, so many of us make New Years Resolutions, and we really mean it, and they often motivate us to change some part of us…for a pretty short time usually.  We must allow ourselves to relax our standards for success of these resolutions.  To better our chances of eventual success,  we must empower ourselves from the onset to try again and again after that first push of inspiration and motivation fade away.

The best part of making a resolution is that it can focus your mental and physical energies in a healthy positive direction.  The worst part is that it can set you up for feeling that you have failed when you break the resolution the first time.  Making a resolution is a way of reminding ourselves that we still give a damn enough to try to move in a healthier more positive direction.  Apathy and indifference and depression do not flourish in a mind still knowing that he or she can make a personal difference.  In that sense, the resolution process is a wonderful effective way to build self esteem and empowerment.

My New Years wishes to everyone are that each of us get better at reducing unnecessary stressful thinking and worrying, learn to relax easier, and regain our childlike joy of living in the present.

BEING TOGETHER WITH UNDIVIDED ATTENTION

A recent Wall Street Journal article highlighted the frustrations that many family members are experiencing because of the almost addictive use of e-mail gadgets and personal digital assistants like the BlackBerry.  Young kids in families seem to be very sensitive to their parents who are often sneaking around the house to secretly check their emails or even scaring the kids using the devices while driving.

Needless to say, many adults have the same reactions to their kids who are constantly on cell phones, either talking or more likely sending text messages to friends.  It seems that too many of us are being swallowed up by the technically advanced ways that we can communicate and be reached at any time anywhere.

In the spirit of Holiday season,  can’t we all somehow just try to really be there for each other when we are physically close enough to really be annoyed and hurt personally by a family member or companion or business associate who just can’t turn off the need to always be available to anybody other than those people who are there watching and waiting?

REMEMBERING PRIORITIES CAN HELP CUT YOUR STRESS

Assume that you have just been told that you have only one year left to live, but that you will remain as healthy and pain free as you are right now.  And with this knowledge of limited time on earth, what would you select as your priorities:  Those Things That Must Be Done Before You Pass?

And as you continue to perform the everday tasks and responsibilities that you must, keep reminding yourself of Your Really Important Priorities.  Hopefully, the more you do, the more likely that important changes will begin to happen for you.

What you think is worth worrying about, or how you feel about losing silly arguments, or how you enjoy quality time with friends, family and trusted colleagues.  Maybe you’ll even be able to relax  and begin feeling more childlike again.  And as you remember what’s really important, you will ease yourself into living more in the present and enjoy it, and let that stressful thinking and worrying about unimportant things just fade away.

CLICK ON THE POSITIVE VOICES

Let’s get honest about some of those voices inside our head.  We all hear them consciously and unconsciously whether we admit it or not. 

Negative Voices that tell us to feel sad, indifferent, inadequate, and powerless.

Positive Voices that encourage us to feel  happy, enthused, competent, and confident.

Whose Voices are they and why do we still listen to them?  The Usual Suspects include parents, teachers, coaches, friends, bullies, lovers, colleagues and bosses.  And sometimes complete strangers and childhood heroes.  We heard these significant Voices at different times in our lives, as infants, toddlers, teens, and adults.

Some of the Voices promote our sense of self esteem and self confidence and ability to succeed and some Voices suppress our sense of self respect and capacity for joy.  Trust Your Gut Reaction.  If  hearing a Voice leads you to  experience stressful thinking and worrying, then click off that Negative Voice and replace it with a Positive Voice of your choice.

It gets easier the more you practice.  Follow this modified Golden Rule:

Speak unto others and unto yourself in as positive a voice as you would want others to speak unto you.
